Instructions to Visitors

Please, notice the following safety risks relating to the fortresses:

  • There are sheer drops by trenches, dugouts and embrasures.

  • On the ground, on top of the dugouts there are 20-50 centimeters high steel pins (were used in fasting camouflage nets).

  • The dugouts are flat, and there are sharp pins both on the roofs and walls.

  • There are different types of structures (for example pack discharges) in the dugouts, which might have become weaker during the years. Those can drop or fall off, or can be already on the floor, so there is a tripping risk.

  • Watch out the uncovered floor drains.

  • The floor drains can be plugged, and there might be water on the floors especially in spring.

  • There might be dangerous holes by rock piles and anti-tank defenses.

  • The stairs can be slippery when wet.

The fortresses of the Salpa-Line are strongly protected. Please just watch and photograph the forts, don’t cause any harm to structures and walk only on signed trail.

Fortifications are located on private area. The traditional Finnish legal concept of everyman’s right, also enshrined in the legislation, allows free right of access to the land despite the owner. Under the terms of the public right access you may not cause any harm or disturb to others or environment. Please don’t walk through yards or other specifically prohibited areas, and don’t damage the nature. You aren’t allowed to drive motor vehicles without the land owner’s permission, and you can’t make an open fire without a compelling need.
